turicTuric is a fairy concerned only with keeping his own sorry hide intact and well paid. Dying of leprosy and with no friends or loyalties, he hires himself out to the highest bidder, whether it be as a fighting hand or assassin, spy or smuggler. Sarcastic, but pleasent, he easily straddles both sides of any fence. No job (unless it deals with harming children) is beneath him since he considers himself on the level of dirt anyway. |
right paw missing two toes the ratRight Paw Missing Two Toes was the first rat to be released from the magical barrier in the Crystal Hall (version 5), and so brought with him the first curse. He is a cautious creature and, beyond the natural curiosity of the rat, has very little interest in the affairs of people - he has a very high opinion of himself and would be easy to bribe or flatter information from.
hanna browningstoneAn angel at first appearance. Her face is rounded and retains a childlikeness - this, combined with her golden hair, dainty mouth, and prominent hazel eyes, gives her an innocent air that is only reinforced by the sweet pitch of her voice. But students who assume she is more sugar than spice are in for a surprise. Hanna has a tongue like a whip and wields sarcasm like a fighting man wields a battle axe. She is harsh, blunt, unapologetic, and slow to compliment; the most a student who lives up to her (some say, unrealistically) high standards can hope for is to be spared one of her usual tongue-lashings. Her late nights spent alone at the Academy have caused some students to suspect deep loneliness, but no one has asked her about it. She would only deny it anyway. |
versya raleighVersya Raleigh is usually identified quite reliably - by those who don't know her name - as, the small woman with the wild hair. She is active, energetic, and birdlike, but her many eccentricities are counterbalanced by her perception and keen understanding. She is, indeed, a small woman, and her hair is, indeed, wild - an explosion of red-going-silver held in indeterminate shapes by a variety of pins and clips. Her face is pointed, and her blue eyes are heavily lidded. She has none of the ingratiating or jovial manner often associated with her field of expertise. Her stated goal is to "raise next-generation politicians", and often describes her students as "missiles" or "javelins" being hurled into the face of old orders and festering routines. Oddities aside, her intelligence and grasp of politics - both the gritty realities of the field and its polished appearances - are unquestionable.
cesare trimboliAn Italian faerie and composer. He is a skilled musician with the ability to play a number of different instruments, from the traditional to the modern. He has a particular fondness for strong and wood-wind but views brass in a less favourable light. Cesare is also an accomplished singer and has a smooth baritone voice. He encourages free-thinking and creativity and laughs with great ease. Easy going, approachable and affectionate he is often the life and soul of any gathering. He is approximately forty years old, with rich olive skin, dark curly hair, that he keeps cut short and a generous, smiling mouth. He is not especially tall and rather prone to plumpness. Finding it difficult to remain still for long periods, you will often find his hands tapping out a rhythm in the air or on the nearest surface. He hums a lot too. |
major norris lakerNorris is a 47 year-old retired veteran who worked for an intergalactic peace organisation. Ironically, the organisation primarily worked by sending soldiers into zones of conflict to break up the fighting. He was born and grew up in America, even serving for a few years in the Army before moving off-plant to fight for intergalactic peace. A no-nonsense man who demands the highest physical fitness from his apprentices, Norris keeps himself in good condition and is just as likely to join in with drills and work-outs. He has close-cropped brown hair, dark brown eyes, tanned skin and a strong, square jawline; at 5'7 he is rather short, but still manages to be intimidating.
halle fossenThe big, gruff blacksmith grew up in a small village in Earth's middle ages to a mason worker. Being the only child, and having an intense affinity for metal rather than stone, Halle's father disguised her as a boy and sent her to an apprenticeship with a master smith in the city. That's right, the intimidating shadow who swings the hammer so forcefully is a female. She became a master smith about two years before the plague struck the land, and fortunately or unfortunately, Halle did not survive on Earth. One of the "miracles" who was given a second chance in shaman, Halle took up her moulds and hammers again to aid fairies and their animals. Despite her large frame, Halle has the wings of a songbird which are unable to provide enough lift to raise her more than a few inches off the ground. |
Lyra KellLyra is only 29, but has travelled across most of Europe and visited every continent except Antarctica. Swedish-born, she originally trained as a photographer and travelled the world taking photos and videos for television and magazines, but after the premature demise of her parents and the wealthy inheritance she began to travel for fun. Lithe and wiry, with golden-blonde hair, hazel eyes and physically fit, Lyra is one of the more spritely and attractive teachers at the academy. Once her money ran out, she decided she wanted to see some other worlds and came to Shaman to explore. She teaches to pay for her travels. She has a great sense of humour and has good organisational skills despite not being very good at budgeting.
Oxana Mikhailovna Born to a member of Lorraine's entourage, Oxana grew up with lavish tastes and surrounded by glamour. Make no doubt that Lorraine insisted that everyone dress in only the highest fashion, even if she never said it. Oxana was fascinated by the fabrics and gems that surrounded her and began to create her own clothes. At first, she was ridiculed for making and designing clothes, which in the beginning were not very good, but Oxana wished to impress her deity and improved until Lorraine seemed to approve of her clothes. Other fairies in Lorraine's court began to commission Oxana, who continued to grow as a designer, taking cues from Lorraine's own fashion tastes. Eventually, whispers began that Oxana's designs may have surpassed Lorraine's and she was banished from court and cursed with arthritis in her fingers and wrists to make designing these lavish gowns harder. |
george bodminGeorge is a larger, middle-aged man whose family originates from the rural southwest of England. He earned his fortune there and 'retired' to Shaman to teach his trade. A sociable, family man, he likes to talk to his students about the 'cute' antics of his two grown-up sons, neither of whom can hold down a decent job and both of whom rely on their father for their income. Bald, with blue eyes and a sunny smile, George also likes to chat while he's working the odd jobs he does around Shaman occasionally and always has a cup of tea in his hand. There's a saying amongst the students that for the best grades, one has to give George a packet of custard creams before taking one's final exam.
Theodore Greyson A quiet man who works tirelessly with his woods, both constructing furniture and carving patterns into his works to mark them as his. Theodore is able to do just about anything with his wood, including creating instruments for the music students and masters at the academy, and desks for the scribes. He is not an attractive fellow with hair that won't stay put and eyes that have seen and lost quite a lot. His nose is large and has been broken before, and only one side of his mouth moves when he smiles and speaks. He's kind to his students, and patient with them as they learn the craft because he believes that the wood is a living thing that must be coaxed, not beaten into submission. |
jaime alanUndeterred by the stiff competition, Jaime was determined to pursue a career in catering from a young age. Unfortunately, she never achieved her dream of owning her own restaurant and more often than not had to work for minimum wage, but she never lost an ounce of talent or passion. Eventually, at the age of 35, Jaime realised that she had a gift for inspiring that passion in others. She had a much more successful career in teaching and eventually moved to Shaman to discover new cuisines and to teach traditional Earth dishes to Shaman-born fairies. With dark skin, curly brown hair and twinkling black eyes, Jaime is a very approachable lady and is much loved by her students.
Thomas ClarkeA long time worker in the monasteries of Europe, Thomas spend his days copying manuscripts and illuminating religious texts for nearly 12 hours a day, around prayer services. As a member of Christianity, rather than any of the fairy religions, Thomas joined the monastery after being driven from his family for his belief system. He wears thick glasses to make up for the poor eyesight caused by straining to read in the dark, and his skin is wrinkled and spotted with his age, as he is immortal. He is frequently asked about retirement, but Thomas Clarke loves what he does too much to give his teaching job up. |
jennifer learyJennifer Leary was actually born in the city and grew up in the city. It wasn't until she was an adult that she met the man who would be her husband and teach her everything she knew about plants and animals and the countryside. They were married and moved to a suburb of a small city in the United States and made their living on the land. It was one fateful evening when she was exhausted that she left her lantern in the barn with the dairy cows. The couple lost everything, and Jennifer Leary left out of guilt. She started over, learning about different land and soil types and what would grow best where. She couldn't escape the guilt from that great fire, however, and decided to move to Shaman, which she had heard about. Once more, she earned her keep from the land, mastering the art of farming on both magical and unmagical earth.
dr ajit guptaAjit originally wanted to become a doctor to support his large extended family in India, but from the first day at university he fell in love with the job. Even today, he spends all his spare time researching the most recent illnesses and remedies, and helping out at the military infirmary at the castle. The move to Shaman was accidental: Ajit was drawn into a rip and deposited here. His failed attempts to get home quickly ceased when he decided he liked living here, and he took up the job at the academy to try and improve healthcare within Shaman. A genuinely affectionate and caring man, he has dark skin, eyes and hair and a short, sturdy frame. |
the ancient creatureThe AC is the reason nobody has any magic this version. A shapeshifting demon, nobody knows its true form: it takes whatever shape it desires. Generally, the AC takes the form of people its company knows personally. It is the only creature with any magic in Shaman and generally appears as an antagonist. You can use it in your posts to harass your characters. You can also have your characters attempt to fight it with the current powers in play.
murrayMurray is a dealer of questionable morality who lives in Olive Grove. While he does engage in legal business, Murray made his wealth by trading and selling pirated goods. Pirates use him to sell their loot through. Streetwise and smart, Murray is excellent at evading the law. Reasonably short with a saggy belly, thick fingers, and crafty, watchful eyes, he usually wears high quality clothes and has an oily charm. An excellent haggler, he usually leaves fairies duped. |
plethubisPlethubis is a creature of ancient magic who appears as a mutated fox made from light. It is particularly fond of the sea and is silver in colour when it is submerged. When on land it turns red-orange. its paws never touch the floor, and it has a habit of drawing its legs up into its body so that it is nothing more than a floating head and tail which flits around like an insect. Its mouth is filled with sharp pointy teeth and extends out beyond its muzzle (think of the Cheshire Cat.) Plethubis has no desire to take over the world, he just likes to play tricks on faeries and mess with their heads/lives. Its has a wicked, and deadly, sense of humour. |
