Non-Player Characters
These characters can freely be used in posts and power-played. They can also be used on the impetus board to provide prompts or catalysts. If your use of a certain NPC leaves a permanent effect on them (e.g. you cut off their hand or kill them), please post on updates to have the information on this page updated. Anyone can also submit a new NPC at any time.
We have three types of NPCs. Plot characters are ideal for helping you further plots; antagonists are villains, bullies or otherwise antagonistic characters; and aides are heroic or helpful characters.
Plot Characters
Agapito, the animal smuggler
Agapito set up shop on one of the Saltrock Peaks during the Great Flood. He traps, smuggles and sells rare and exotic animals, particularly magical ones. Agapito is not known for his love or tender care of animals, and those he owns are generally kept caged or stabled in confined spaces. His animals are often sold to pirates as working animals, to rich nobles as trophy pets, or to Li, the exotics meat butcher. Since the end of the flood, Agapito's business has been booming and he now employs personal security and a team of trappers. Agapito's trappers have been known to steal beloved pets in the past.
Agapito is tall and thin, with a bony, angular face and long fingers. He has fair skin, darting blue eyes and dark brown hair. He's a man of comfort and enjoys the luxury of his stately home, in which he is spending more of his time as he increasingly employs others to take care of the "dirty work". He's on good terms with a lot of the pirate factions and with many of the nobles.

One of the worst omens in Shaman is the Phantom Candle, a ghost ship most commonly sighted off Midnight Shores. The ship invariably appears at night, bringing a thick fog with it. It is a translucent wooden galleon, rigging flying and gaping holes torn in the sales. If ever the ship sails close enough, skeletal, ghostlike figures can be seen moving about on it. They seem to moan as they work, the eerie sound carrying across the ocean.
Although it waves a pirate flag, the Phantom Candle never attacks other ships and does not even appear to notice them. That’s not to say it’s harmless, however. A ghostly member of its crew may appear to a sailor who has recently seen the ship pass by. If the crewman of the Phantom Candle presents the sailor with a lit candle, it signifies that there is an important task the sailor has to undertake. If the sailor is presented with an unlit candle, It means he or she is marked for death. If the spectre merely appears, presenting nothing, it is an omen for bad luck.

An intense young woman often seen loitering in the shipyard taverns. She's a sly, sneaky little minx with a sharp ear and a sharper mind. If you're looking for shady dealings, hot rumors, or dangerous adventures, Esirya's a good place to start - if you've got the coin. But beware, Esirya didn't get to where she is now by being afraid to shed some blood when the time calls for it; how else do you think she's managed to stay alive so long, doing what she does?
Esirya appears rather ambiguous in age, being small and animated with long reddish-silver hair and bright green eyes. She'd be drop-dead gorgeous if it weren't for the nasty scar occupying the left side of her face - some say it was a dog that did it, or maybe a wolf, while others mutter it was actually a daring human; either way, Esirya will proudly claim that she killed the beast so "all's well that ends well, dontcha think?". It might even be a mark left by her very own familiar, a Lynx every bit as cunning and fearsome as his fairy. Esirya has only one wing, a tattered black one resembling a crow's; the other was torn off in battle, leaving only a pale white bone, making her flightless.
Esirya has a wide variety of magical talents and may have already found her ren, but that would be telling, wouldn't it?

Li works in partnership with Agapito. He used to be established on Saltrock Peaks but has now based himself in Laketon-on-the-moor, where he runs a successful butcher's. While he does sell "normal" meats like pork and beef, Li specialises in rare and exotic meats such as unicorn and dragon. He has recently expanded his business to include a little shop which sells other "parts" of the animals, like fur or bones.
Li is Chinese and quite small. He has dark hair, fairer skin and brown eyes, and usually wears his butcher's uniform, characterised by a red and white chequered apron. He has a sly look about him and speaks in a reedy voice.
Murray, the dodgy dealerLi is Chinese and quite small. He has dark hair, fairer skin and brown eyes, and usually wears his butcher's uniform, characterised by a red and white chequered apron. He has a sly look about him and speaks in a reedy voice.
Murray is a dealer who operates on both sides of the law, and has managed to make himself useful enough to everyone that no one will run him out of business. Murray began life on Earth as an antiques dealer and has since moved on to trading in rare and magical artefacts on Shaman. His shop is located in Laketon-on-the-moor, and contains many interesting and unique trinkets. Murray acquires most of his merchandise by dubious means, and has many connections in the criminal world.
Murray isn't short, but he appears so because he is so round. He has a permanently ruddy complexion and a wide smile which he greets his customers with. Murray is intelligent and careful with his words; it's how he's been able to remain everyone's friend for so long. He knows when to appease, but also how to extract the most amount of profit or favourability from just about anyone. He is also a coward at heart.

Omni is an Ancient Creature resembles a leprechaun. He is small, dapper and always wears green and black like every day is St Patrick's Day. He is never seen without his top hat, which he often lifts at people while beaming. Omni is profoundly cheerful in all circumstances and seeks entertainment. What he calls "entertainment", others might call "having your limbs torn off in horrific circumstances". He doesn't seem to grasp pain or mortality, but thinks adding danger makes life more fun. Like almost all Ancient Creatures, he favours ordinary fairies over deities.
Omni is the host of the Omniety competition, which takes place once every real life year.
The CollectorOmni is the host of the Omniety competition, which takes place once every real life year.
The Collector is a mysterious figure who lives in his mansion in Laketon-on-the-moor. He collects rare and powerful artefacts, which he locks away in his stately home away from the prying view of others. If you have something unique to sell, the Collector will certainly want to buy it!
Few have seen the Collector, who rarely comes out to mingle with ordinary people. When he does, he usually wears a top hat and tails, and pulls his collar up to obscure his face. Legend has it that this is because he is heavily scarred and doesn't want others to see. He is tall, pale and has violet eyes and bony fingers.

Legend has it that this is because he is heavily scarred and doesn't want others to see. He is tall, pale and has violet eyes and bony fingers.
The Ragman can frequently be seen anywhere in Shaman. He travels between different places with his cart and donkey, singing songs in his gravelly old voice. The Ragman will buy anything and everything from you, but he offers little in return. He is good for selling your old, broken or common things no one else wants to buy, and is also good for people who are desperate for cash.
The Ragman is an elderly gentleman with a long, grey beard. He wears raggedy clothes full of holes and smells as if he hasn't bathed in weeks. His skin is leathery brown from a life outdoors and he has kind, brown eyes.

Antagonists
Agni, the pirate lord
Agni is a "free father"; an NPC who can be used as a father for players who want their female character to have a baby.
Agni is a notorious and reviled name in Shaman. A pirate lord, he is known for looting and pillaging coastal towns. While on raids, Agni frequently rapes women indiscriminately.
Agni is on the shorter side, standing at 5'8", but what he lacks in height he makes up for in physical brawn. Stocky, with broad shoulders and a square-shaped body, he is a formidable force. Agni would have been handsome once, but his face is battle-scarred and his nose is an odd shape where it has been broken multiple times. He has blonde hair, green eyes and fair (type ii) skin.
Agni is a man without scruples. He appears to feel no empathy at all and simply takes what he wants. A highly skilled sailor and fighter, he roams the open ocean aboard his boat and attacks coastal towns with his crew. Agni does not speak very much, preferring to bark single-word orders at his men, and craves power and money above all else. He has the Super Strength, Enhanced Agility and Metal Manipulation abilities.

Arno is a "free father"; an NPC who can be used as a father for players who want their female character to have a baby.
Arno is a serial dater and consistently only dates girls younger than him, usually between the ages of 14 and 18. Arno actively wants more children; he frequently brags that he wants enough children to form their own football team. Sometimes he persuades girls to have children with him, sometimes he engages in sabotaging contraception and sometimes he just refuses to use contraception. He tries to have a playful role in his children's lives but is uninterested in paying child support or doing any work (e.g. nappy changing) to support the children.
Arno is tall and skinny with pale skin and dark hair. He covers his acne with an attempt at a beard. He has a thin face, beady eyes, long fingers and a straight, slender body. He has black hair, blue eyes and very pale, type 1 skin.
Arno isn't the brightest young man but thinks he is. He has issues with authority and struggles to hold down a job because of his tendency to stick two fingers up at his bosses. Arno lives and breathes sports but prefers to watch rather than partake in them and dreams of being a football team manager.

Zwarte, a young and ambitious pirate captain, seeks to unite the pirate factions to overthrow the Crown. Secretly, he wants to be king. He is constantly engaged in treasonous plots.
Zwarte is in his late 20s and is tall and broad with lighter skin, black hair and blue eyes. He is charming and a good conversationalist, and exploits this in his attempt to seek alliances with the other pirate factions. Zwarte's piracy specialism is the daring capture of royal ships and their resources. He is an excellent seaman, commander and swordfighter.
Esther-May,
the soul thiefZwarte is in his late 20s and is tall and broad with lighter skin, black hair and blue eyes. He is charming and a good conversationalist, and exploits this in his attempt to seek alliances with the other pirate factions. Zwarte's piracy specialism is the daring capture of royal ships and their resources. He is an excellent seaman, commander and swordfighter.
Esther-May is a seemingly normal old lady. Grey and wizened, she appears frail and harmless to those who meet her for the first time.
All, however, is not as it appears.
Esther is an Immortal One, a powerful wingless fairy from the beginning of time. Her exact magic is unclear, but she seems to have the ability to conjure things which fairies desire and she is a master potions-maker. She lives in a huge, gothic mansion which has been erected on one of the Peaks and sells her wares from there, rarely if ever venturing out. Anyone can see her to obtain things they want - perhaps a familiar, a special item, magic, or even unique goods not found in the shops or power bank. Esther's ability to grant these things does not seem to be restricted, although her wares come at a high price. In exchange for her services, Esther takes children.
Anyone who comes to Esther seeking to exchange a child for her services must sign a contract which states that Esther owns the child and its soul. There are two types of contract:
- Those which expire when the child turns 16 years of age, and
- Those which never expire.
Each contract does have a small-print section which gives a way for the contract to be broken and the child to be freed. This is always something which can only be undertaken by the child (assuming they know what it is - Esther keeps the contracts locked up, safe and sound) and is unique for each child.
Esther is only interested in taking children under the age of 10, and prefers them the younger the better. She isn't bothered about where the children come from. Those coming to see her can either offer her their own child or one they have stolen from someone else. As such, the number of kidnaps of young children has risen dramatically in Shaman. Enterprising pirates have started snatching and selling children to anyone wishing to receive services from Esther. Parents are becoming increasingly worried and watchful of their young ones. Orphans are most at risk.
The children Esther takes must stay with her in her mansion and work for her. The older ones care for the younger ones, who begin work as soon as they are able.
It is not clear why Esther only takes children in exchange for her goods, but it is clear that the work performed by the children is essential to her. Many hundreds of years ago, Esther did a deal with the Council of Originals which enables her to work without their interference. Even the gods cannot stop her. Esther's familiar, a black wolfdog named Bane, acts as a guard dog in the mansion and is hated and feared by the children.
Esther is an NPC who can be used by anyone in their posts. If you want your character to do a deal with her, post on the Impetus board in character for her and a member of staff will play her for you. She also provides a new character-playing opportunity; anyone can play a child character who has been given to Esther and who works for her in the Peaks. If you want to do this, it is entirely up to you what your child's contract is like, how much freedom they have (e.g. to travel the rest of Shaman) and what type of work Esther has them doing. There is complete flexibility here, as Esther treats all of her children differently. You might want to play them with or without cuffs/tags; as desperately seeking to find their 'freedom clause' in the contract to free their souls; as raised to be obedient towards Esther; as imprisoned in a dungeon; as free to roam Shaman and collect herbs for her potions - whatever you like! Characters who seek Esther out don't necessarily have to be evil child-snatchers - they could be, for example, an incurably sick young woman who offers her first-born child in exchange for health and life. It could be a very impoverished family who sells one child in exchange for the money to take care of the rest.
Esther is (naturally) a particularly dark and hated villain, so may become the stuff of children's nightmares or the bad guy in stories/nursery rhymes. She currently lives in her gothic mansion on Saltrock Peaks.

Vasco is a "free father"; an NPC who can be used as a father for players who want their female character to have a baby.
Vasco is a self-proclaimed 'connoisseur' of women; the kind of man who brags about the number of notches on his bedpost. Vasco is well-known across Shaman for his promiscuous ways, but he still manages to charm more women into bed each day. He thinks contraception is 'the woman's job' and is an indifferent father.
Vasco is particularly handsome, with a symmetrical, square-shaped face and a firm jaw. He stands at about 6'3" and is large and muscular with a triangular-shaped body. He has brown hair, brown eyes and an intermediate brown skin tone.
Vasco is a chauvinist who considers women's place to be in the home, caring for their families. He considers himself god's gift to women and seeks to 'please' as many of them as possible. He is charming, flirtatious and disinterested in long-term relationships. He engages in 'laddish' behaviour and is often found bragging about his sexual exploits at the local tavern. He is concerned by feminism and laments the loss of 'men's rights' as more women gain power in society. He is very into fitness and engages in strength training daily.
He has an unnamed twin and the Persuasion and Sexual Magnetism abilities.

Iraya doesn't have parents; she was hatched from an egg in the Easter special in 2018. She has dark skin, frizzy dark auburn hair, and brown eyes with read flecks. Iraya is tall and athletically built with long legs and eyelashes, a diamond-shaped face, broad nose and plump lips.
She has the abilities Precognition, Air Manipulation and Evasion. Iraya has a talent for manipulative magic and operations her Air Manipulation better than her other two powers. She is poor at psychic magic and has little to no control over her Precognition.
Iraya is athletic, favouring long distance running and obstacle courses. She is rebellious and has something of a cruel streak in her, frequently engaging in bullying behaviour. She will often pick on other children, especially those younger or smaller than her.
